Established in 1979 by Charlie Richie Sr., The Backwoodsman began in Livingston, TX. Charlie Sr was a professional fisherman in the 1970s and a freelance writer for several magazines. After not being promoted to a staff member on a magazine, he was inspired to begin his own publications. The Backwoodsman was born!
The Backwoodsman is known covering many outdoor subjects, including primitive skills, camping, hunting, knives, bushcraft, self-reliance, and SO MUCH MORE!
As of summer 2025, The Backwoodsman is no longer a subscription print magazine. It is still available in some retail outlets but mainly is relying on digital subscriptions. Menasha Ridge Press has teamed up with The Backwoodsman to create a collectible series of books featuring Backwoodsman articles.
